How do you explain large-scale urban planning in simple terms? By drawing inspiration from… Sim City.

That’s the bold bet taken by the Department of Land and Housing of the Canton of Vaud. With humor and clarity, we created a series of educational videos to explain the rules of construction outside building zones.

Conforming, exceptional or illegal buildings — four chapters to understand everything, jargon-free. The visual approach, inspired by city-building games, makes the content accessible to everyone — professionals, local officials, and citizens alike.

The project quickly expanded beyond cantonal borders. Several other cantons and partner institutions joined the initiative. Versions in German and Swiss German were produced to reach a broader audience.

Shared on official platforms and in the media, the videos have reached a large audience, with an impressive full-view rate of 39% — proof that even complex topics can be captivating when told the right way.
